FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MOSAIC

Intergenerational, Creative Community Building

Southern Gulf Islands, British Columbia – April, 2009

The Ptarmigan Music & Theatre Society is pleased to announce that they have received funding from the 2010 Legacies Now Foundation and the BC Gaming Commission to begin the second year of operation for their MOSAIC program as of February 1st, 2009. Initiated in the spring of 2008, MOSAIC is an intergenerational, educational arts program involving the elementary schools from Pender, Mayne, Galiano and Saturna Islands, along with several community organizations and more than 30 Gulf Island artists from a wide variety of disciplines. With the MOSAIC program, Ptarmigan delivers educational arts workshops in the schools, as well as during after-school programs and summer camps. In the process, they also collaborate with a broad range of organizations in the true spirit of community building, including public libraries, museums, community centers, theatre companies, music & conservancy societies and Parks Canada.

Mentored by the artists and elders in these communities, MOSAIC provides our children with a greater sense of their local history, cultural heritage and identity as Gulf Islanders and British Columbians. Ptarmigan’s intent with this program is twofold: to alleviate the isolation and alienation that can occur with children from these small, rural communities, as well as to encourage the children to develop friendships with each other through collaboration on artistic projects while still in elementary school.

The MOSAIC workshops utilize an incredible variety of disciplines, including storytelling, song-writing, animation, music (instrumental & vocal), Kodály music instruction, fiddle group, drumming, dance, pottery, film-making, painting, drawing, paper mâché, murals, music therapy, drama, environmental education, astronomy and local history. The workshops are inspiring, fun-filled experiences, as witnessed by the enthusiastic comments in the Testimonials section of Ptarmigan’s newly re-designed website and the artworks in their Participants Art Gallery.

To ensure their workshops and events are non-discriminatory, the Ptarmigan Society strives to make their programs affordable, if not free of charge, as often as possible. As result, Ptarmigan relies on donations from government agencies, corporate sponsors and private individuals, and couldn’t operate without community support. Please note that the Ptarmigan Music & Theatre Society is a registered charity and issues tax receipts for financial donations or donations in kind, including musical instruments, art supplies, computers, A/V equipment, t-shirts, or alternately welcomes professional accounting and legal services, catering for workshops, printing of brochures and posters, BC Ferry vouchers and other transportation expenses to assist them in their operations.
